The Federal Accessibility Deadline Is Extended
Dental practices that receive federal funding now have an additional year to meet updated digital accessibility requirements, providing more time to ensure websites, mobile apps, and online tools are accessible to patients with disabilities.
Many dental practices received welcome news this spring when the United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced an extension of the compliance deadlines for updated digital accessibility requirements.
The requirements stem from a 2024 update to Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, which prohibits discrimination based on disability in programs and services receiving federal financial assistance. The updated rule clarifies that digital resources, including websites, mobile applications, and self-service kiosks, must be accessible to individuals with disabilities and meet established technical accessibility standards.
The regulation applies to a broad range of dental organizations that receive federal funding directly or indirectly. This includes dental schools, community health centers, Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program providers, hospital-based dental clinics, and other federally funded dental programs.
Originally, organizations with 15 or more employees were required to comply by May 11, 2026, while smaller organizations had until May 10, 2027. Under the revised timeline, those deadlines have each been extended by 1 year. Organizations with 15 or more employees now have until May 11, 2027, to comply, while organizations with fewer than 15 employees have until May 10, 2028.
Digital accessibility ensures that patients with vision, hearing, mobility, or other disabilities can effectively access and use online resources. Accessible websites and digital tools must work with assistive technologies and be designed so users can perceive, navigate, and interact with content regardless of ability. Click here to read more.
