After reading this course, the participant should be able to:

  1. Discuss the role of Porphyromonas gingivalis in the development and progression of periodontal diseases.
  2. Identify the emerging evidence of P. gingivalis‘ impact on neurodegenerative diseases.
  3. Note the connections between P. gingivalis, its virulence factors, and their effects on the blood-brain barrier, iron metabolism, and central nervous system homeostasis.

Isis Marsh, RDH, MS, is an assistant professor and clinic coordinator in the Dental Hygiene Unit at Eugenio Maria de Hostos Community College in the South Bronx, New York. With more than 25 years of experience in general, pediatric, and periodontal practices, she has taught courses on dental materials, dental radiology, and preclinic/clinic. Anna Matthews, RDH, MS, is a professor and chairperson of the Dental Hygiene Program at New York City College of Technology. She has taught oral anatomy, pharmacology, principles of dental hygiene care-II seminar, and clinical dental hygiene, and has served as one of the clinic coordinators. Her research interests include emerging issues in dentistry and dental hygiene, microbiology of the oral and systemic diseases, novel pharmacotherapeutics and their effects on general and oral health, as well as interdisciplinary education, educational innovations, and technology in the classroom.
