LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Lewis Jones, D.M.D., M.D., recently joined the University of Louisville School of Dentistry as an assistant professor of oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMS).
“In addition to providing the entire scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery: dentoalveolar implants, advanced forms of pain control, trauma, orthognathic and reconstruction, Jones brings an expanded expertise in pediatric cleft and craniofacial surgery to our institution and practice, “said Brian Alpert, D.D.S., F.A.C.D., F.I.C.D., professor and chair of the Department of Surgical and Hospital Dentistry.
Jones is a graduate of Brigham Young University, the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine and the University of Alabama School of Medicine. He completed residency training in oral and maxillofacial surgery at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and a fellowship in pediatric cleft and craniofacial surgery at Charleston Area Medical Center. He most recently practiced OMS in Huntsville, Alabama.
“Oral and facial surgery has a tremendous impact on lives – it is truly gratifying to work with families of children to help them understand certain abnormalities, and then transform a child’s facial structure so they can speak and eat well,” Jones said.
Each year Jones volunteers to take part in interdisciplinary medical trips to provide care to the underserved. Most recently, he participated in the Fall 2015 Remote Area Medical outreach in Somerset, Kentucky where dental school students and residents met oral health needs. He also has provided cleft lip and palate repairs internationally in Mexico, Guatemala and Paraguay.
Jones has published a number of academic manuscripts and book chapters on topics including orthognathic surgery, craniofacial syndromes, oromandibular dysostosis, pediatric infectious diseases of the maxillofacial region and scalp reconstruction.
He is a member of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association, and the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.
