NYU Dental Hygiene Student Honored for Excellence in Ethics and Professionalism

Abdulla Almalahi, a graduating dental hygiene student from New York University (NYU) College of Dentistry, has been named the recipient of an award recognizing exceptional professionalism and ethical standards. Supported by Dimensions of Dental Hygiene, the honor is peer-nominated and commemorates the legacy of Alla J. Wheeler, RDH, MPA, a clinical assistant professor of dental hygiene at NYU and a Dimensions’ Peer Review Panel member and contributor, who passed away from cancer in June 2010.

A first-generation Yemeni American, Almalahi will graduate in May 2026, becoming the first licensed healthcare provider in his family. His peers selected him for his strong work ethic, commitment to teamwork, and ability to connect meaningfully with patients. Throughout his clinical training, which included rotations at Bellevue and Gouverneur hospitals as well as specialty departments in orthodontics, periodontics, pediatrics, and care for patients with disabilities, he developed a reputation for prioritizing patient comfort, education, and trust.

Almalahi’s focus on prevention and clear communication has set him apart among his classmates. Following graduation, he plans to practice in a periodontal setting while continuing to grow clinically and remain engaged in community outreach. “I feel honored to receive this award,” Almalahi says. “It pushes me to keep working hard and improve every day.”
