New Tool Can Detect Demineralization Before Carious Lesions Develop

Researchers at the University of Washington—through funding from the United States National Science Foundation’s Partnership for Innovation—have invented a handheld device that measures demineralization of teeth before incipient decay is present. The device, called the O-pH prototype, is able to ascertain levels of acidity and plaque biofilm via the use of LED light. The light evaluates the response of the tooth to the application of a chemical dye. The motivation behind the O-pH prototype is to help clinicians practicing in rural and low-income areas to support the oral health of those who face barriers to accessing care.
