Michigan Licenses Its First Dental Therapist, Opening a New Chapter in Care Delivery
Michigan has licensed its first dental therapist, marking a significant milestone in the state’s evolving oral health workforce. Dana Obey, DT, brings CODA-accredited training and a strong commitment to underserved communities to her new role at Bay Mills Health Center.

Michigan has reached a historic milestone with the licensure of its first dental therapist, Dana Obey, DT, who joined Bay Mills Health Center in September 2025. Obey completed her education through the Commission on Dental Accreditation-accredited dax̌aybus Dental Therapy Program at Skagit Valley College after receiving a Michigan Primary Care Association Dental Therapy Scholarship in 2022. Her background includes clinical experience in mobile dentistry and global outreach through the 1000 Smiles program in Jamaica, as well as national advocacy for dental therapy. Obey is a member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians. Prior to becoming a dental therapist, she worked as a dental assistant. Click here to read more.
