Mastication Is Key to Successful Diabetes Management

Research conducted at the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine shows that the ability to chew is key to keeping blood sugar levels low among patients with Type 2 diabetes. The study included 94 patients with Type 2 diabetes in Turkey who were divided into two groups: one included patients with healthy occlusion supporting their ability to chew successfully while the other had patients with tooth loss who struggled to chew well. Group one’s blood glucose level was 7.48; group two’s was 9.42. Chewing impacts the amount of saliva produced, the generation of the feeling of fullness, and the ability to consume healthy foods. The study suggests improving occlusal function should be considered among those with Type 2 diabetes. Click here to read more.
