Legislation May Allow Medi-Cal to Reimburse for Silver Diamine Fluoride Application

The California State Assembly voted in favor of legislation that would allow Medi-Cal to reimburse service providers for the application of silver diamine fluoride when used as a caries-arresting agent.

The California State Assembly voted in favor of legislation that would allow Medi-Cal to reimburse service providers for the application of silver diamine fluoride when used as a caries-arresting agent. SB-154 limits the benefit to children under the age of 6, persons with disabilities or other underlying conditions, as well as adults who live in a licensed nursing facility or a licensed intermediate care facility. The bill also allows for the reimbursement of this service when provided by a registered dental hygienist in alternative practice who meets the requirements described in the bill, according to the American Dental Education Association.

Introduced by Sen. Richard Pan, SB-154 passed the senate on May 23 and will head to the desk of Gov. Gavin Newsom.
