January 3, 2017 Sacramento, Calif. — The January Journal of the California Dental Association focuses on women in dentistry and explores their history, challenges and accomplishments in the profession.

“This issue looks at the change in demographics among dentistry,” said Kerry K. Carney, DDS, editor-in-chief of the Journal. “The authors discuss the significance of increasing numbers of women dentists in clinical practice, academic areas and in leadership within organized dentistry.”

The first article, “California Women Dentists: A Look Back,” provides information on the earliest achievements and successes of women dentists, including their history in the early California schools of dentistry and dental societies, their service and professional practice.

“Women Leaders Essential to Organized Dentistry” is an article that offers an opinion of how information- and awareness-building are key to increasing participation of women as leaders in dentistry.

In another article, titled “Changes in the Academe: Women in Dental Education,” the authors discuss the history and data that appear to support the notion of a developing pipeline toward greater numbers and strength of women in dental education.

“Does California Project the Future of Dentistry?” presents statistical data and provides a commentary discussing how the majority of U.S. dental students will soon be women — the authors examine gender differences in the labor supply of dentists and the potential effects on the dental care sector.

In the article “Women in the Boardroom: Reflecting the Changing Gender Demographics of Dentists,” the author discusses that while more women are in the workplace today, there are still relatively few women who hold leadership positions. Sidebars by a young female leader provide personal experiences that illuminate the discussion.
