Howard University Focuses ‘Give Kids a Smile’ Event on Migrant Children

Most migrant children traveling to the United States in a quest to obtain asylum have not had any access to professional dental care since their journeys began. This inspired pediatric dental resident Jose Garcia, DDS, to suggest that Howard University College of Dentistry in Washington, DC, focus their annual “Give Kids a Smile Event” on migrant children. Garcia, who immigrated with his mother to the US from Ecuador as an infant, was successful in his pitch and on February 11, the dental school provided preventive, restorative, and emergency dental care to 95 migrant children. More than 70 Howard students volunteered during the event, and the College of Dentistry administration hopes to help the young migrant patients make Howard their dental home.
