After reading this course, the participant should be able to:

  2. Identify the role of oral bacteria in the development of dental caries and how their activity is influenced by dietary choices.
  3. List practical approaches for assessing patients’ dietary habits, providing nutritional counseling, and using tools to promote oral health and prevent dental caries.

Heather Tuthill, MPH, BSDH, RDH, is an assistant professor in the Dental Hygiene Program at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Dentistry in Richmond, where she is the senior dental hygiene clinical coordinator and the course director for nutrition, dental public health, and the senior clinical courses. Tuthill’s research interests include nutrition, community dental health, and intraprofessional collaboration. She is also president of the Virginia Dental Hygienists’ Association. Kimberly Lintag-Nguyen, EdD, MSDH, RDH, is an assistant professor in the Dental Hygiene Program at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry in Richmond. She serves as the program’s academic coordinator and chair of the Dental Hygiene Curriculum Management Committee. Teaching both junior and seniors in preclinical and clinical courses, Lintag-Nguyen directs courses on infection and immunity, dental materials, and dental hygiene theory II, III, and IV. Her research interests include patient and clinician health and safety, radiology, and student engagement. She is a member of Dimensions of Dental Hygiene’s Editorial Advisory Board.
