California Budget Preserves Medi-Cal Dental Funding for Now
A last-minute state budget agreement delays $1 billion in proposed Medi-Cal Dental cuts until 2027, giving providers and millions of patients a temporary reprieve while uncertainty remains.
California dentists and Medi-Cal beneficiaries received welcome news as state leaders approved a budget that preserves Medi-Cal Dental funding and reimbursement rates for another year. The agreement postpones nearly $1 billion in proposed reductions until July 1, 2027, averting cuts that many feared would significantly reduce access to oral healthcare.
The delayed reductions would have reversed reimbursement increases established through Proposition 56, the 2016 tobacco tax initiative that substantially expanded dental access throughout the state. Since those higher reimbursement rates were implemented, participation by dental providers has increased, allowing more children and adults enrolled in Medi-Cal to receive routine and preventive oral healthcare.
Dental organizations cautioned that the proposed reductions could have had widespread consequences for both providers and patients. Many dentists indicated they would be forced to reconsider their participation in the Medi-Cal program if reimbursement rates returned to levels established decades ago, potentially making it even more difficult for patients to find providers accepting Medi-Cal coverage.
The funding delay follows months of coordinated advocacy by dentists, healthcare organizations, and community groups that urged lawmakers to preserve the program. Their efforts highlighted the importance of stable reimbursement in maintaining access to care for millions of Californians who rely on Medi-Cal Dental.
