Summit Explores Oral-Systemic Link
In February, global leaders and scientific experts from the European Federation of Periodontology, International Diabetes Federation, and Sunstar Americas Inc organized an international summit to discuss the relationship between diabetes and periodontal diseases.
In February, global leaders and scientific experts from the European Federation of Periodontology, International Diabetes Federation, and Sunstar Americas Inc organized an international summit to discuss the relationship between diabetes and periodontal diseases. This Perio- Diabetes Workshop comprised 15 experts in the field of diabetes and periodontal diseases. During the workshop—held in Madrid—the experts assessed available scientific evidence on the perio-diabetes link, not only to reach a consensus but also to develop guidelines on this topic for physicians, dentists, and the patients they serve.
The group asserted that oral-health education is beneficial to patients with diabetes who should be advised that periodontal therapy may improve their metabolic control and reduce the risk of potential complications.
