A Medieval Gold Bridge Reveals the Surprising Origins of Cosmetic Dentistry

Advanced scientific analysis of a 15th–17th century skeleton uncovered evidence of an early gold dental bridge, offering rare insight into wealth, craftsmanship, and the long history of restorative dentistry.

A multidisciplinary research team used X-ray spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and radiocarbon dating to better understand the identity of human remains discovered in Aberdeen, Scotland. Their findings suggest the individual was a middle-aged man who likely died between 1460 and 1670. Dental analysis revealed that he had a gold bridge installed well before his death, representing one of the earliest documented examples of this type of restorative work in Scotland.

The bridge was constructed from a high-karat gold alloy, indicating significant wealth and access to skilled artisans. Historical records show that approximately 22 goldsmiths operated in Aberdeen during that period, many of whom would have possessed the technical expertise to fabricate and securely ligate such a device. The presence of this restoration highlights not only advanced craftsmanship but also the longstanding relationship between dentistry and social status.

Researchers note that in the Late Medieval and Early Modern eras, appearance was closely linked to character, health, and moral standing. A restored smile may therefore have carried both aesthetic and social significance. This discovery underscores the deep historical roots of dental restoration and the enduring interplay between oral health, identity, and societal values. Click here to read more.
