American Dental Association Announces Winner of John W. Stanford New Investigator Award

Dr. Robert Yau of the University of Connecticut Health Center to be honored for research

CHICAGO, Dec. 9, 2014 — The American Dental Association (ADA) Council on Scientific Affairs recently named Robert Yau, D.M.D., as the recipient of its second annual John W. Stanford New Investigator Award. Dr. Yau will present his winning research, “Influence of Core/Veneer Thickness Ratios on Failure of Bilayered Dental Ceramic Crown Systems,” in March at the ADA Standards Committee on Dental Products annual meeting in Boston.

The John W. Stanford New Investigator Award honors the legacy of Dr. Stanford who is credited with establishing the ADA’s current standards program. Dr. Stanford, who died in 2011, was a 40-year ADA employee who played a pivotal part in standards setting and development. The award underscores the crucial role that dental standards play in patient health and safety and in the efficacy of dental products while paying homage to Dr. Stanford’s contribution.

Dr. Yau earned his dental degree in May from the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine. He is pursuing specialty training in oral and maxillofacial surgery (MD Integrated) at Kings County Hospital Center / SUNY Downstate Health Science Center in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Applications for the Stanford New Investigator Award are accepted annually from dental students or dentists who have earned their D.D.S. or D.M.D. degrees no more than five years prior to the time of selection. Submissions must be original research that addresses some aspect of the use of standards in dental research or clinical application. Applications are being accepted through Sept. 30, 2015, for the 2015 award. To apply for the John W. Stanford New Investigator Award or learn more about the ADA Standards Programs, please visit ADA.org/dentalstandards.
