Oklahoma Expands Dental Team Roles in Workforce Access Bill
New legislation could redefine supervision, teledentistry, and team-based care, reshaping how dental hygienists and dental assistants deliver treatment.
Access to oral healthcare remains a persistent challenge in many regions, and Oklahoma lawmakers are advancing a bold strategy to address it. House Bill 3934, recently passed by the state House with overwhelming support, proposes significant changes to dental workforce utilization, particularly for dental assistants and dental hygienists.
At the center of the legislation is a shift in supervision requirements. Dental assistants would no longer be limited to working under direct supervision of the dentist for certain tasks. Instead, they could operate under general supervision to support dental hygienists in procedures already within the dental hygienist’s scope of practice. This adjustment signals a move toward more flexible, team-based care models designed to increase efficiency and expand patient access.
The bill also modernizes care delivery by incorporating teledentistry. It allows a patient of record to be seen remotely for dental hygiene or emergency services. Additionally, the definition of eligible treatment sites would expand to include nonprofit clinics operating in community settings such as churches.
Now heading to the state Senate, the bill represents a pivotal moment in how Oklahoma approaches access, efficiency, and the future of dental care delivery. Click here to read more.
