Trace Heavy Metals Linked to Periodontitis

Essential trace heavy metals are commonly found in tap water, and Chinese researchers wanted to determine their effect on periodontal health. A total of 1,348 participants were included in the nationwide research, and the concentration of trace heavy metals in local tap water was measured. The study revealed that individuals with periodontitis had notably higher exposure to essential trace heavy metals in their tap water. After adjusting for various factors, including gender, age, and residential location, it was found that for every increase in the concentration of iron, manganese, and copper in tap water, the risk of periodontitis increased by 30%, 20%, and 20%, respectively.
