West Virginia Medical School Helps Addicts Improve Their Oral Health

West Virginia has suffered dearly during the opioid epidemic, experiencing some of the highest death rates due to drug overdose in the United States. Opioid addiction causes a multitude of health problems as well as deleterious effects on oral health. To address these health problems, the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine in Huntington has launched a new program—Recovery With a Smile—to serve the dental needs of West Virginians who are recovering from substance use disorders. Through teams of public health dental hygienists, dentists, and dental residents, dental care and patient education are provided to participants in substance abuse disorder treatment programs.
