Minimizing Risk of Swine Influenza A Virus Infection (Swine Flu)

What is Swine Flu

Swine Influenza A (H1N1), is spread from person to person in

respiratory droplets of cough and sneezes of an infected person as the

droplets are propelled in the air and deposited in the mouth or nose of

nearby people. It can also be spread when a person touches a

respiratory droplet on another person or contaminated object and then

touches their own eye, mouth or nose. Persons infected with swine

influenza are considered potentially contagious up to 7 days following

illness onset. Persons who are ill for longer than 7 days after illness

onset are considered potentially contagious until symptoms have

resolved. Symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches,

headaches, chills and fatigue. Diarrhea and vomiting have also been

reported.

Minimizing Risk of Infection for You and your Patients

Standard droplet and contact precautions should be used. As the

primary method for preventing swine flu infection, the DCD and APIC

recommends frequent handwashing with soap and water for 15-30 seconds.

When soap and water are not available, antiseptic hand sanitizers with

at least 60% alcohol are suggested. Kerr TotalCare offers an extensive

line of VioNex® and VioNexus™ hand soaps, antiseptic sprays and gels to meet various needs of facilities and health care workers. Visit our Products

section for more information about our VioNex No Rinse Gel, VioNex

Antiseptic Towelettes, VioNexus No Rinse Spray, VioNexus Antimicrobial

Foaming Soap, VioNexus Foaming Soap with Vitamin E, and VioNex

Antimicrobial Liquid Soap.

As stated in the CDC Interim Guidance for Infection Control in

Healthcare Setting, “routine cleaning and disinfection strategies used

during influenza seasons can be applied to the environmental management

of swine influenza.” Viruses and bacteria can live 2 hours or longer on

surfaces. To minimize cross contamination from the environment, use a

hospital-grade, EPA-approved surface disinfectant such as Metrex

CaviWipes™ and CaviCide®. Our surface disinfectants are

effective against influenza viruses in as little as 2 minutes. Use

CaviWipes and CaviCide on high touch surfaces such as chairs,

countertops, computer keyboards and phones.

Visit our Surface Disinfectant section for more details about our products.
