Dean of Howard University Dental School Receives ADEA Honor

WASHINGTON—Leo E. Rouse, D.D.S., F.A.C.D., dean of the Howard University College of Dentistry, was honored with the 2008-2009 Presidential Citation by the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) recently during the organization’s 86th Annual Session and Exhibition in Phoenix.

“Dr. Rouse continues a tradition of innovation and compassion,” ADEA said of his service to the organization and dental education.

ADEA is the “voice” of dental education. Its members include all U.S. and Canadian dental schools and many allied and postdoctoral dental education programs, corporations, faculty and students.

The organization noted that Dr. Rouse came to the College of Dentistry after serving more than 25 years in the Dental Corps of the United States Army. He concluded his career as Commander and Chief Operating Officer of the entire U.S. Army Dental Command at the rank of Colonel.

Instead of retirement, he chose academic dentistry at the Howard University, where he was named dean in 2003.

Dr. Rouse also serves as one of ADEA’s four commissioners on the Commission on Dental Accreditation, which accredits all U.S. and Canadian dental schools and many allied and postdoctoral dental education programs.

He was as one of 10 recipients of the award.

ADEA 2008-2009 President Charles N. Bertolami, D.D.S., D. Med.Sc., and other members applauded the recipients for their service.

“ADEA thanks the recipients of the 2009 ADEA Presidential Citations for their distinguished service to the association and dedication to advancing the dental education community,” Bertolami said during the opening ceremony.”
