WASHINGTON, DC—Ronald J. Hunt, D.D.S., M.S., Harry Lyons Professor and Dean of the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Dentistry, was installed as ADEA President on March 18 at the 2009 ADEA Annual Session in Phoenix, Arizona. Dr. Hunt had spent the previous year serving as ADEA President-elect.
“Ron has a rich history of service on ADEA committees and other dental organizations. His leadership experience will serve the Association well as ADEA continues to enhance dental education for the future generations of teachers and students,” said outgoing ADEA President Charles N. Bertolami, D.D.S., D.Med.Sc.
Dr. Hunt has a history of active service to the dental education and practice communities. Currently, he is a member of the ADEA Commission on Change and Innovation in Dental Education (ADEA CCI) and is Chair of Public Relations for that Commission. He has served on the ADEA Board of Directors as Vice President for the ADEA Council of Deans and ADEA President-elect. He has also served on the Commission on Dental Accreditation Task Force (CODA) on Predoctoral Dental Education Standards, the ADEA Reference Committee on Association Policy (2005 Chair), and the ADEA Educational Affairs Advisory Committee. In 1997, he was the recipient of the William J. Gies Educational Fellowship.
Dr. Hunt has been Dean of VCU School of Dentistry for nine years, and was previously the Dean for Academic Affairs at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Dentistry. He has published over 40 peer-reviewed articles about epidemiological surveys, clinical research, health services research, and educational research. Dr. Hunt also has been active in the American Association for Dental Research (AADR) and was section officer in geriatric oral research.
A board-certified public health dentist, Dr. Hunt is a Diplomate of the American Board of Dental Public Health and has been named to the National Academies of Practice in Dentistry, the International College of Dentists, the American College of Dentists, and the Pierre Fauchard Academy. He is an elected Delegate to the American Dental Association House of Delegates and a member of the Virginia Dental Association (VDA) Board of Directors and the VDA Legislative Committee, and he serves on the Virginia Center on Aging Board of Advisors and the Virginia Area Health Education Centers Board of Directors.
Dr. Hunt received both a D.D.S. degree and an M.S. degree in Community Dentistry and Dental Public Health from the University of Iowa.
