Breath-Based COVID-19 Tests Are on the Horizon

While the use of a breathalyzer to determine an individual’s blood alcohol level is common knowledge, what about utilizing such a device to test someone for COVID-19? Researchers around the world—from the Netherlands to Singapore to the United States—are working on creating a breath test for COVID-19 with the hopes of simplifying the process for early detection of SARS-CoV-2. A team of researchers at The Ohio State University has already applied to the US Food and Drug Administration for Emergency Use Authorization for its proprietary COVID-19 breathalyzer. Scientists suggest that the accuracy of such tests is good; however, the consumption of some foods and alcohol in addition to tobacco use may impact the veracity of results. Click here to read more.
