Contactless Thermometer Helps Monitor Student Health

Lennon Rodgers, PhD, MS, director of the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s (UW) Grainger Engineering Design Innovation Laboratory,  has created a low-cost prototype “contactless” thermometer to help students monitor their COVID-19 symptoms.  

Lennon Rodgers, PhD, MS, director of the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s (UW) Grainger Engineering Design Innovation Laboratory,  has created a low-cost prototype “contactless” thermometer to help students monitor their COVID-19 symptoms.  

Using a sensor from a commercially available thermometer, Rogers added a microcontroller and distance sensor controlled by open-source code. Rodgers passed his initial idea to Nathan Strachen, a UW-Madison electrical and computer engineering graduate student and a Fab Fellow at the innovation lab who improved the mechanical design, and added a different microcontroller that connects to the internet, according to the university. 

The devices based on Rodgers initial design are now provided in residence halls on campus set aside for students isolating for at least 10 days after a positive COVID-19 diagnosis.
