Providing dental care to pregnant patients is both safe and necessary to ensure the health of both mothers and infants.
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
After reading this course, the participant should be able to:
- List the factors that influence oral health during pregnancy, and those affecting patient comfort while receiving dental care.
- Identify common oral conditions experienced by pregnant patients, and the need for preventive care and treatment.
- Discuss the transmission of cariogenic bacteria from mother to child, and adjunctive methods for maintaining oral hygiene during pregnancy.
- Explain when national guidelines for oral health care during pregnancy were issued, and when medical clearance is needed before providing oral health services to this patient population.
