Survey Shows Preventive Care Is a Top Priority for Americans

A recent Delta Dental report highlights a positive trend in Americans prioritizing preventive dental care to save on costs and avoid health issues. With more adults adopting daily oral care habits and visiting dental professionals for preventive care, there’s hope for better overall health outcomes.

In celebration of National Dental Hygiene Month, Delta Dental has unveiled new insights from its 2024 State of America’s Oral Health and Wellness Report, which analyzes consumer habits and attitudes toward dental health. According to the report, a growing number of adults are emphasizing preventive care, with more than 90% acknowledging that maintaining dental hygiene helps them avoid costly dental procedures. In 2023, 83% of dental visits were preventive, an increase from 78% the previous year, while unexpected visits declined from 41% to 36%.

Preventive oral care can reduce the risk of chronic conditions such as heart disease and diabetes. However, the report also found that children’s oral care habits still need improvement. Though 72% of children brush twice daily, nearly half consume too many sweets, and many lack consistent flossing routines.

The report underscores dental insurance’s role in promoting preventive visits, signaling a promising shift toward proactive dental health across the United States.
