Survey Reveals Need for Menopause-Specific Oral Health Benefits

A new Delta Dental survey reveals that most women are unaware menopause can affect their oral health, even as many experience dry mouth, sensitivity, and caries. The findings highlight a growing need for menopause-specific dental benefits and greater professional guidance to help women protect their oral health during this life stage.

Delta Dental’s 2025 Oral Health and Menopause Report highlights a major gap between women’s oral health needs during menopause and the specialized dental coverage they want. The survey found that while many women experience oral health changes, such as xerostomia, dentinal hypersensitivity, and dental caries during menopause, awareness is low. In fact, 83% of women ages 40 and older are unaware these symptoms can be linked to menopause, even as 40% reported dry mouth and more than one in four noted sensitivity in recent months.

This disconnect leaves many women searching for answers online instead of seeking guidance from oral health professionals. Nearly one-third say they struggle to find adequate resources. Yet, when provided with proper coverage, women are eager to act: 82% said they would schedule more dental prophylaxes if covered by insurance, and 71% would feel more comfortable discussing menopause-related oral health issues with their dentist. More oral health professionals are acknowledging the importance of menopause in oral health, with more than half now proactively raising the issue with patients. Click here to read more.
