 pamela mcclainCHICAGO – (November 14, 2011) – Pamela McClain, DDS, of Aurora, Colorado will be named President of the American Academy of Periodontology Board of Trustees during its 97th Annual Meeting, held November 12-November 15, 2011 in Miami, FL. 
 
Dr. McClain maintains a full-time private periodontal practice in Aurora, Colorado, and also serves as a clinical assistant professor at the University of Colorado School of Dentistry. She began her career as a dental hygienist, and continues to have a deep appreciation of the important role the hygienist plays in the management of periodontal disease and patient education. 
 
“It is more important than ever that our patients understand the impact of periodontal health on overall health,” says Dr. McClain. “I am looking forward to using my role as President of the American Academy of Periodontology to highlight the crucial role of the dental team – from hygienist to specialist – in helping our patients achieve periodontal health.” 
 
Dr. McClain has been an AAP member since 1985, and previously served on the Board of Trustees as Vice President in 2010 and Secretary/Treasurer in 2009. Dr. McClain has also been active on the AAP’s Finance Committee, Continuing Education Oversight Committee, Strategic Planning Committee and Annual Meeting Committee. In addition, she has been a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology since 1992. 
 
According to 2011 AAP President Dr. Donald Clem, “Dr. McClain is uniquely qualified to help guide the Academy and specialty of periodontics into the future by helping to raise the bar on periodontal disease awareness. Her commitment to comprehensive periodontal treatment and collaborative care has already made a positive impact on the strategic direction of the AAP.” 
 
Dr. McClain received her Bachelor’s of Science degree in dental hygiene in 1980; her dental degree from the University of Colorado in 1985; and completed her postgraduate work in periodontology at the University of California – San Francisco in 1987. She has been involved in periodontal research since 1985, and has numerous publications in several peer-reviewed journals including the Journal of Clinical Periodontology, Journal of Periodontology and the International Journal of Periodontics and Restorative Dentistry. Dr. McClain also lectures extensively in the Unites States and abroad and has presented at the American Academy of Periodontology Annual Meeting, the American Dental Association Annual Meeting, the Academy of General Dentistry Annual Meeting and the Chicago Dental Society Midwinter Meeting, among many others.
