The NIOSH Addresses Worker Safety in the Dental Setting

Citing risks posed by aerosol exposure in the dental setting, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is studying ways to improve the safety of oral health professionals. In a partnership with the West Virginia University School of Dentistry, the NIOSH investigated the effectiveness of four aerosol-removal systems during ultrasonic instrumentation and crown preparation procedures in a dental clinic. Results showed that none of the systems provided significant protection against aerosol exposure. The NIOSH has undertaken an additional study on how ventilation systems and aerosol exposure in dental settings contribute to lung disease among oral health professionals. Click here to read more.
