NIDCR Funds Investigation of the Oral Microbiome in Thrush and HPV Risk
The oral microbiome plays an important role in systemic health but much about this relationship remains unknown. The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) is providing $7.8 million in grant monies to the University at Buffalo, Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine to investigate the role of the oral microbiome in the risk for thrush among patients undergoing chemotherapy to treat cancer. Approximately 40% of patients receiving chemotherapy experience this fungal infection. In addition, the funds will support research into the oral microbiome’s influence on the risk for human papillomavirus (HPV) infection among individuals with human immunodeficiency virus.
