National Museum of Dentistry Hosts ‘Your Marvelous Mouth’ Elderhostel Program
BALTIMORE, MD—This May, the National Museum of Dentistry launches a new Elderhostel A Day of Discovery education program for seniors. Your Marvelous Mouth: The New Frontier of Oral Longevity features nationally renowned experts speaking about the unique issues involved in oral healthcare in the 55+ population. The day-long program includes a tour of the museum that traces history of dentistry from the ancient Egyptians to recent advances in bioengineering, a lecture on the mouth/body connection, a behind-the-scenes tour of the Museum’s vault, and a lively panel discussion with experts in dentistry and medicine about how advances in dentistry, medicine, and science are changing oral health care.
The day-long program is offered each Wednesday in May (May 7, 14, 21 & 28) and costs $74, including lunch. Go to www.dentalmuseum.org for details, or call to reserve a space at Elderhostel at 1-877-426-8056.
Guest speakers include: Janet Yellowitz, DDS, Director of Geriatric Dentistry at the University of Maryland’s Baltimore College of Dental Surgery; Samuel C. Durso, MD, AGSF, Associate Professor in the Johns Hopkins University’s Division of Geriatric Medicine & Gerontology; Barbara J. Smith, PhD, RDH, MPH., Manager of Geriatrics and Special Needs Populations with the American Dental Association; Sheryl L. Ernest Syme, RDH, MS, Associate Professor in the Division of Dental Hygiene, University of Maryland Dental School; Herb Inge, DDS, of the Baltimore Veterans Hospital; and Scott Swank, DDS, Museum Curator.
Program Schedule
9:15 a.m. – Registration
9:45 a.m. – Guided gallery tour – a fascinating look at the past, present and future of dentistry
11 a.m. – The Mouth/Body Connection – lecture and Q&A with a nationally renowned leader in the field of oral healthcare in the 55+ population
12 p.m. – Lunch
1 p.m. – Behind-the-scenes tour of the Museum’s vault with Museum Curator Scott Swank, DDS
2 p.m. – The New Frontier of Oral Longevity – panel discussion and Q&A with experts in dentistry and medicine
3 p.m. – Program concludes
An Affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, the National Museum of Dentistry is located at 31 South Greene Street (at Lombard), a short walk from the Inner Harbor. Admission is $6 for adults, $3 for youths, seniors, and students with ID and free for children age 6 & under.
