As the field of research into oral-systemic relationships burgeons, those of us in the hygiene field know we have an opportunity and an obligation to redefine our roles within health care delivery. In order dynamically interact with other health care providers to translate research into meaningful health improvements for those we serve, it is imperative that we educate ourselves and our clients thoroughly about inflammatory processes throughout the body and the roles oral health and nutrition play.

Because there is great resistance to change built into systems, because prevention within dental practices is often undervalued by the dentists who control hygienists’ oral care delivery, and because there is only the most remedial understanding of oral-systemic health within the general population, a book outlining what we know – aimed for public consumption- was overdue. Mouth Matters was written using effective “talking points” to explain inflammatory links, intra-oral camera pictures, success stories, and extensive research.

Mouth Matters is as much a reference book for dental professionals, physicians, and alternative medicine practitioners looking for oral-systemic “talking points” they can adopt, as it is a concise book for lay people who want to understand chronic degenerative disease and the roles nutrition and oral health play in creating those diseases. It also provides numerous potent political reasons  why hygienists can and should take stronger and more independent roles in improving the health of our nation’s citizens. The book can be a powerful tool for hygienists, whether they want to use it in their own practices or as a political tool for change and new ways of thinking about what is at stake. The book is supported by a website that continuously updates as new research and products are available to keep hygienists and their clients informed about root causes of inflammation and how to subdue it.
