Mouth Breathing Often Not Addressed by Health Care Professionals
Because of the frequency of re-care appointments some people visit the dental office more often than their primary care provider, which puts dental professionals in an excellent position to address systemic and oral health issues such as the problems caused by mouth breathing.
A recent study published in General Dentistry found that traditional health care professionals are not aware of the many health problems associated with mouth breathing.
Mouth breathing is often caused by allergies and can have particularly damaging effects in children. If left untreated, long-term mouth breathing can cause irregular facial and dental development as well as other problems, such as negative sleep habits and reduced oxygen concentration in the blood.
In some cases, dental professionals can effectively treat the causes of mouth breathing and are trained to look for the typical symptoms including swollen tonsils and adenoids.
