LSUHSC’S ANDRIEU TO LEAD NATION’S ONLY ACADEMIC DENTAL GROUP

New Orleans, LA – Sandra Carlin Andrieu, PhD, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at the LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans School of Dentistry, was elected 2009-10 President-elect of the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) at its annual session in Phoenix. She will become the ADEA President at the conclusion of the 2010 ADEA Annual Session in Washington DC.

As the sole national organization representing academic dentistry, the American Dental Education Association is the voice of dental education. ADEA members are more than 16,000 students, faculty, staff, and administrators from all of the U.S. and Canadian dental schools, many allied and postdoctoral education programs, and numerous corporations working in oral health education.

In the first class of the LSUHSC Dental Hygiene Program, Dr. Sandra Andrieu earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Dental Hygiene from the LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans School of Dentistry in 1974, and was employed in private practice full-time until 1978 when she began her teaching career at her alma mater. She earned a Master of Education degree, with special emphasis in Curriculum and Instruction, from the University of New Orleans in 1980 and, during her tenure as Coordinator for the Program in Dental Hygiene, Dr. Andrieu became the first Dental Hygiene faculty member to earn a Doctor of Philosophy degree – hers in Education Administration degree from UNO. After serving as Coordinator of the Program in Dental Hygiene from 1985-1994 and moving through the academic ranks to become the first dental hygiene faculty member to become a professor, Dr. Andrieu was promoted to the position of Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and continues to serve in that capacity. She was the first female to serve as an Associate Dean in the dental school.

Dr. Andrieu serves on numerous School of Dentistry, Health Sciences Center and national committees. Since 1993, she has served as Chair of the Curriculum Committee for the dental, dental hygiene and dental laboratory technology programs, giving her responsibility for the curriculum, scheduling and all academic performance concerns for all pre-doctoral students. In addition, she has had a major role in the accreditation process for the School of Dentistry. During her tenure at the dental school, Dr. Andrieu has served as Chair of the Self-Study for the Program in Dental Hygiene and Co-Chair of the Self Study Steering Committee for the School of Dentistry (all programs). She is, again, serving in the latter position in preparation of the accreditation site visit in March of 2009. In 2007, she was appointed liaison for the LSU Health Sciences Center to the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) accreditation committee.

Dr. Andrieu has supported her profession by serving in leadership roles on the local, state and national level. In March 2008, she completed a three-year term as a member of the Board of Directors for the American Dental Education Association (ADEA), representing the Council of Sections as Vice-President.
