White Paper Emphasizes the Importance of Early-stage Detection
of Oral Cancer when Survival Rate is Highest
British Columbia, Canada – September 14, 2006 – LED Dental Inc., a Vancouver-based medical device company, announced today the availability of a white paper emphasizing the importance of using tissue fluorescence to help detect oral cancer in its early stages.
Wayne Rees, President of LED Dental Inc., stated, “Because oral cancer is often undetected or untreated until the later stages, it has significantly lower survival rates compared to other types of cancer. Early detection of oral cancer is extremely important because, if detected early on, the survival rate may be as high as 82%.” 1
The white paper, entitled “Early Identification of Cancerous and Precancerous Lesions in the Oral Cavity,” describes how early screening, diagnosis and treatment for oral cancer can save lives. “Because oral cancer can resemble other disorders or medical problems, it makes it even more difficult to identify it with certainty,” said Rees.
Additionally, the paper describes a new technology that uses a narrow band of blue light and specialized optical filtering to help dental professionals save lives by helping them identify oral mucosal abnormalities that are or may lead to oral cancer. This direct optical fluorescence visualization technology is the foundation of LED Dental’s VELscope™, an oral mucosal examination device which recently received FDA 510(k) clearance.
