L. Jackson Brown, D.D.S., M.Phil., Ph.D., to Retire as Journal of Dental Education Editor
 
WASHINGTON, DC—The esteemed Editor of the Journal of Dental Education (JDE), L. Jackson Brown, D.D.S., M.Phil., Ph.D., has announced he will retire from his position in March 2012. Dr. Brown has served the JDE admirably since 2009. Under his direction, the manuscript submission process for the JDE was significantly streamlined. The JDE now attracts 60% more submissions annually from more than 50 countries around the world. Through his leadership as Editor, Dr. Brown has carried on the JDE’s tradition as the premier dental education journal. 
 
A member of ADEA since 1982, Dr. Brown has brought a unique combination of policy and research expertise to the JDE. He also has a wide range of experience in scholarly publishing, including publication of numerous articles, monographs, and books and his service on the editorial boards of Dental Abstracts and the Journal of the American College of Dentists. Dr. Brown has been active in academic dentistry, organized dentistry, and dental research for 40 years, in addition to practicing general dentistry for 25 years. Before being named Editor of the JDE, Dr. Brown was Associate Executive Director, Health Policy Resources Center, at the American Dental Association (ADA) and Chief of Staff of the ADA’s 2001 Future of Dentistry Project. Prior to that, he served as Director, Division of Epidemiology and Oral Disease Prevention, at the National Institute of Dental Research (NIDR). He is a member of Omicron Kappa Upsilon, the national dental honorary society, and a Fellow of the American College of Dentists. He received a Presidential Citation from and Life Membership in the ADA in 2007, and is also a Life Member of the Illinois and Chicago dental societies. 
 
ADEA will undertake a national search to find a successor to Dr. Brown. The ADEA Board of Directors will make the appointment of the next Editor, and in support of that process a consultant with wide-ranging experience in scholarly publishing searches has been engaged.
