L. Jackson Brown, D.D.S., M.Phil., Ph.D., Named Editor of Journal of Dental Education

WASHINGTON, DC—L. Jackson Brown, D.D.S., M.Phil., Ph.D., has been named by the Board of Directors of the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) to serve as Editor of the Journal of Dental Education (JDE). Dr. Brown will succeed Olav Alvares, B.D.S., M.S., Ph.D., editor of the JDE since 2001, in March 2009.

“Dr. Brown brings a unique and highly relevant combination of policy and research experience to the JDE that will ensure it continues as a leading scholarly resource for the dental education community. The ADEA Board of Directors is pleased he accepted the JDE editorship. He is well suited to carry on the JDE’s tradition of excellence,” said ADEA President Charles N. Bertolami, D.M.D., D.Med.Sc.

Dr. Brown has been active in academic dentistry, organized dentistry, and dental research for more than 35 years. He also practiced general dentistry for 25 years. Recently, Dr. Brown was Associate Executive Director, Health Policy Resources Center, at the American Dental Association (ADA) and Chief of Staff of the ADA’s 2001 Future of Dentistry Project. Prior to that he served as Director, Division of Epidemiology and Oral Disease Prevention, at the National Institute of Dental Research (NIDR). Dr. Brown has also served as a consultant for oral health organizations, including the ADA, ADEA, the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO), and Henry Schein, Inc.

Dr. Brown also has a wide range of experience in scholarly publishing, including publication of numerous articles, monographs, and books and service on the editorial boards of Dental Abstracts and the Journal of the American College of Dentists. He has also been an editorial referee for the Journal of the American Dental Association (JADA), Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), Journal of Dental Research (JDR), Journal of Periodontology (JOP), Journal of Clinical Periodontology (JOCP), and Journal of Public Health Dentistry (JPHD), among others.

“I am gratified and honored that the Board of Trustees of the American Dental Education Association has chosen me to be Editor of the JDE. It is one of the most distinguished and important journals in all of health,” said Dr. Brown. “Following in the successful footsteps of Dr. Alvares is indeed a challenge. I pledge my best efforts to maintain the outstanding literary and intellectual reputation the JDE currently enjoys.”

Dr. Brown has been a member of ADEA since 1982. He is a member of Omicron Kappa Upsilon, the national dental honorary society, and a Fellow of the American College of Dentists. He received a Presidential Citation from and Life Membership in the ADA in 2007, and is also a Life Member of the Illinois and Chicago dental societies. Dr. Brown holds a doctor of dental surgery degree from the University of Missouri and master of philosophy and doctor of philosophy degrees from Columbia University.
