In the two decades since Juneau, Alaska, removed fluoride from its public water, oral health professionals have observed a concerning trend: an increase in dental caries among children, according to reporting by KTOO, a nonprofit telecommunication company.
Fluoride had previously been accessible to the entire population through the water system. Its removal has placed a greater reliance on individual treatments, which cannot match the widespread protection offered by fluoridation.
Studies have shown a significant rise in the need for restorative procedures among children in Juneau since fluoride was eliminated.
