Juneau Demonstrates the Results of Fluoride Removal

In the two decades since Juneau, Alaska, removed fluoride from its public water, oral health professionals have observed a concerning trend: an increase in dental caries among children, according to reporting by KTOO, a nonprofit tele­communi­cation company.

Fluoride had previously been accessible to the entire population through the water system. Its removal has placed a greater reliance on individual treatments, which cannot match the widespread protection offered by fluoridation.

Studies have shown a significant rise in the need for restorative procedures among children in Juneau since fluoride was eliminated. This trend has led to increased dental expenses for families and placed additional strain on local dental providers.
