 joan otomo-corgelCHICAGO – (November 14, 2011) – Joan Otomo-Corgel, DDS, MPH of Manhattan Beach, California, was installed as Secretary/Treasurer of the American Academy of Periodontology Board of Trustees during its 97th Annual Meeting, held November 12-15, 2011 in Miami Beach, Florida. 
 
Dr. Otomo-Corgel received her undergraduate degree from California State University – Fresno in 1972 and her dental degree from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) School of Dentistry in 1976. She completed her periodontal residency at the West Los Angeles Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center in 1979. Dr. Otomo-Corgel received her Masters in Public Health from the UCLA School of Public Health in 1980. 
 
In addition to maintaining a private practice limited to periodontics, oral medicine and implantology in Los Angeles, Dr. Otomo-Corgel is an Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Periodontics at the UCLA School of Dentistry. She is also faculty and chair of research at the Greater Los Angeles Veteran’s Affairs Health Care Center Dental Service, and faculty at the West Los Angeles City College of Dental Hygiene Department. 
 
A member of the AAP since 1977, Dr. Otomo-Corgel has previously been active in many Academy committees including the Continuing Education Oversight Committee, Finance Committee, and Clinical Practice Committee. She has also served on the Board of Trustees of the AAP Foundation as well as the AAP Board of Trustees.  
 
“Dr. Otomo-Corgel has already made outstanding contributions to the AAP through her previous efforts serving on committees and as a former member of the Board. I’m confident she will continue to have a constructive influence on the AAP and periodontal profession for the future as she takes on this new position of Secretary/Treasurer,” said Pamela McClain, 2012 AAP President.
