How a Pilot Program is Transforming Dental Care for Patients with Disabilities

For individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, a trip to the dental office can be overwhelming. A new pilot program at Tufts Dental Facilities is breaking barriers with home visits and telehealth, making dental care more accessible and personalized.

Dental visits can be stressful for many, but for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), the challenges can be even greater, which may interfere with their ability to access care. Recognizing this critical gap, Tufts Dental Facilities (TDF) in Boston launched a pilot program in November 2023 to improve access and patient experiences through innovative care models.

Funded by a $175,000 grant from the CareQuest Institute for Oral Health, the program introduces a family-centered approach that includes home visits and teledentistry. A dedicated team, consisting of a dental hygienist and a social worker, connects with patients in familiar environments, easing anxiety and ensuring that dental care is tailored to individual needs. By meeting patients where they are, the program addresses not only their oral health but also social factors that impact their overall well-being.

One of the most significant challenges for patients with IDD is tolerating a traditional dental visit. For some, success may mean simply allowing an oral health professional to take a quick look inside their mouth. By focusing on what is achievable for each patient, the program helps build trust and comfort over time. In addition, caregivers receive personalized guidance on maintaining oral hygiene, further supporting long-term health outcomes.

Beyond direct patient care, the initiative also aims to train and standardize approaches for dental professionals who work with patients with IDD. A newly developed intake form, modeled after World Health Organization guidelines, gathers insights into a patient’s functional abilities, cooperation level, and specific needs, ensuring a customized and effective approach to care.
