RWJF Supports Award-Winning Website for Low-Income Youths

WASHINGTON, DC (December 1, 2009)—The American Dental Education Association (ADEA), the leading institution in the dental education community, received the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s President’s Grant to expand its award-winning health careers website ExploreHealthCareers.org (EHC).

The $50,000 grant will add new components and resources to EHC that will provide low-income and underrepresented minority youths access to more than 120 health care careers, 500 funding and enrichment programs, and 7000 academic programs.

“ADEA is grateful for the continued support of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation,” said ADEA President Ronald J. Hunt, D.D.S. “The President’s Grant will help ExploreHealthCareers.org build a stronger, motivated, and diverse health workforce.”

“The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation is delighted to award a President’s Grant to ExploreHealthCareers.org,” said Linda Wright Moore, Senior Communications Officer for the RWJF Human Capital portfolio. “The site aligns with the Foundation’s priority to attract and prepare individuals from diverse backgrounds for careers in health and health care.  EHC.org makes an important contribution toward eliminating racial and ethnic health disparities and improving the nation’s health.”

The President’s Award complements earlier RWJF funding and will expand the website audience and actively engage visitors including middle and high school students. The website also provides educators and parents with tools to interest young people in health care careers.

The new interactive content for the site will include profiles of RWJF scholars, providing role models and inspiration to young students. Information on prevention and wellness, increased social marketing features, and expansion of the mentoring and tracking components will also be achieved.

EHC was recently recognized by Medicine 3.0 as one of the “Top 50 Medical Career Blogs.” The International Academy of the Visual Arts awarded EHC with two Silver “Awards for Distinction” for Copy Writing and Health Career Information in the 15th Annual Communicator Awards: Honoring Excellence for Communications Professionals.

The American Society of Association Executives listed EHC on its Associations Advance America 2009 Honor Roll. In 2007, the site received the Apex Award for Creative Writing.
