In a fitting tribute to the “mother of dental hygiene,” Esther M. Wilkins, BS, RDH, DMD, Dimensions of Dental Hygiene presented its inaugural The Esther Wilkins Lifetime Achievement Award to its namesake during a ceremony held in June at the American Dental Hygienists’ Association’s Annual Session in Las Vegas.
Wilkins was chosen based on her many contributions to the advancement of the clinical practice of dental hygiene. The award, which will be presented annually, was created to recognize the distinguished career of an oral health care professional who has greatly contributed to the enrichment of the dental hygiene profession. During the presentation, Dimensions Editor In Chief Anna Pattison, RDH, MS, characterized Wilkins as an “esteemed mentor” who has demonstrated an “unparalleled dedication to teaching and writing.” Editorial Director Jill Rethman said the award is an embodiment of Wilkins in name, spirit and purpose, and noted, “Esther Wilkins inspires all of us to be our best and to never forget that our ultimate goal is to provide the best possible care to patients.”
Colgate sponsored the award as a reflection of the company’s commitment to the advancement of dental hygiene. Colgate’s Senior Manager of Professional Relations Karen Raposa, RDH, MBA, praised Wilkins for her “long-standing and tireless commitment to the profession.” Raposa pointed out that the spirit of the award complements Colgate’s goal to continuously support dental hygienists in their dedication to their patients and profession.
