October 13 2014 — Crosstex has received several customer calls on Ebola virus and Enterovirus as headlines make national news. Most frequently incoming questions are in regards to the efficacy of endusers choices in face mask protection, hand sanitizers, disinfectant wipes and/or high-level disinfection.

In response, Crosstex International®, PDI Inc. ®, and Medivators® have drafted customer communications over the past week [see attachments]. Since products have no specific label claims against the Ebola virus or Enterovirus, the recommended suggestion is to select products with label claims that support inactivation of similar or more even resistant viruses as compared to common enveloped viruses.  For example utilizing a face mask with the highest rated ASTM Level. In addition to filtration level, it is equally important to consider the ‘fit’ of your mask as even the best filter will not provide good protection to the wearer if the fit is not adequate because air will leak around the mask and unfiltered air will be inhaled. Moreover, even if a surgical mask has a “better” filter, the lack of a close seal to the face will negate filter performance because particles will follow the path of least resistance and travel through the gaps between the surgical mask and the face.*

Exposure to Ebola viruses could occur in health care settings where clinical staff are not wearing appropriate protective equipment, such as masks, gowns, and gloves. Proper cleaning and disposal of instruments, such as needles and syringes, is also important. If instruments are not disposable, they must be sterilized before being used again.
