EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

After reading this course, the participant should be able to:

  1. Identify Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) regulations, including recent updates, enforcement mechanisms, and penalties for noncompliance.
  2. Recognize internal and external threats to patient data security in dental practices and implement effective risk mitigation strategies.
  3. Discuss how to report suspected HIPAA violations, the investigative process, and appropriate response measures within dental settings.

Michelle Boyce, DHSc, RDH, FADHA, is the program director and clinical assistant professor of dental hygiene at Byrdine F. Lewis of Nursing and Health Professions, Georgia State University in Atlanta. She has been working in academia for 14 years and has been practicing dental hygienist in general and periodontal practices since 1999.


Donna Catapano-Martinez, DHSc, RDH, CDA, is an adjunct clinical assistant professor in the Department of Dental Hygiene and Dental Assisting at New York University College of Dentistry in New York. She is also an online adjunct professor in the School of Health Sciences at Georgia Highlands College in Rome. Catapano-Martinez has more than 20 years of experience in academia and has been treating patients in private practice since 1999. She can be reached at dlc8@nyu.edu.


Marci Bennafield, MPH, is a clinical instructor in the Health Informatics Program at Byrdine F. Lewis College of Nursing and Health Professions, Georgia State University. She began teaching following an extensive career in healthcare data analytics and business intelligence consulting.


Cedric Truss, DHA, MSHI, is chair of the Department of Health Sciences and a clinical associate professor at the Byrdine F. Lewis of Nursing and Health Professions, Georgia State University. He has been working in academia for 10 years and has more than 15 years of healthcare and public health experience.
