  1. Discuss the significance of recognizing and addressing substance use disorders (SUDs) in a dental setting.
  2. Identify evidence-based screening tools for identifying SUDs.
  3. Describe the public health approach of screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment in dental practice.

Cathrine Steinborn, DDS, practices general dentistry in Santa Clara, California, and is a part-time clinical instructor in the Department of Integrated Reconstructive Dental Sciences at the University of the Pacific Dugoni School of Dentistry.

Katie Brydon, LCSW, LAC, MAC, EMDR-c, is a licensed clinical social worker and a licensed addiction counselor in Colorado. Her practice focuses on eye movement desensitization and reprocessing-based treat­ment of complex psychological trauma and advanced treatment of addictions. Brydon is a founder of Road to Me Recovery, co-founder of Genesis Behavioral Health, and clinical director of Lighthouse Recovery.
