Colorado Running Back Trades Football for Dentistry

After multiple concussions, Charlie Offerdahl is retiring from football and shifting his focus to a future in dentistry. His journey from walk-on tailback to dental school hopeful is inspiring the oral health community and beyond.

Charlie Offerdahl, a University of Colorado at Boulder tailback known for his grit and leadership, has announced his retirement from football to pursue a career in dentistry. Offerdahl, who overcame the odds as a walk-on to earn a scholarship and make an impact on the field, made the emotional decision after suffering multiple concussions. He informed his teammates at the start of fall camp that he would not be returning, choosing instead to protect his long-term health and focus on his academic goals.

Majoring in molecular, cellular, and developmental biology, Offerdahl is set to graduate in December and is already setting his sights on dental school. His decision has sparked support from many, including head coach Deion Sanders, who praised Offerdahl’s work ethic and commitment, and encouraged the community to help fund his dental education. Offerdahl’s dedication to excellence continues—only now, it’s with a handpiece instead of a football. Click here to read more.
