Canadian Dental Hygiene School Launches Study on Oral Cancer Prevention

Researchers at the Dalhousie University School of Dental Hygiene in Nova Scotia, Canada, have launched a 3-year study on the efficacy of a drug used to treat Type 2 diabetes in preventing oral cancer. The study will include nine sites across the United States and Canada and will include patients who have oral leukoplakia or erythroplakia, or precancerous oral lesions. A control group will receive a placebo and the treatment group will receive the drug metformin. Over 24 weeks, researchers will document the effects of the drug on the precancerous lesions.
