Artificial Intelligence Offers New Way to Locate Mandibular Canals

Researchers at the Finnish Center for Artificial Intelligence, Tampere University Hospital, Planmeca Oy, and the Alan Turing Institute are using artificial intelligence (AI) to accurately identify the location of mandibular canals.

Researchers at the Finnish Center for Artificial Intelligence, Tampere University Hospital, Planmeca Oy, and the Alan Turing Institute are using artificial intelligence (AI) to accurately identify the location of mandibular canals. The new model was published in a paper appearing in Scientific Reports, “Deep Learning Method for Mandibular Canal Segmentation in Dental Cone Beam Computed Tomography Volumes.” This method is based on using deep neural networks, as researchers trained the AI model using a dataset consisting of three-dimensional cone-beam computed tomography scans.

This novel, automated method is designed help quickly determine the precise location of the mandibular canal to plan dental implant treatment, including the size and position of the implants used. According to the study, barring any special patient conditions, the model is as accurate as traditional approaches to implant planning.
