Anemia Treatment May Hold Promise in the Fight Against Caries

Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine and Indiana University have found that a treatment designed to address iron-deficient anemia may also reduce caries-causing bacteria in the oral cavity. The therapy is a solution containing ferumoxytol followed by a hydrogen peroxide mouthrinse. Study authors found that daily application of the solution in a nightguard followed by a hydrogen peroxide rinse significantly decreased the adhesion of caries-causing bacteria to the tooth surface. The study was published in the journal Nano Letters. Click here to read more.
