AMA Approves Code for Healthcare Personnel to Apply SDF

The American Medical Association (AMA) recently approved a Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) code for healthcare providers to receive reimbursement for the application of silver diamine fluoride (SDF) to arrest dental caries lesions without the provision of restorative care such as a filling. Prior to the addition of this CPT code, only dental professionals could receive reimbursement for SDF application. The code will be introduced in July 2023. By enabling healthcare professionals to apply SDF, more patients will have access to a simple, pain-free, and effective preventive strategy for tooth decay. Introduction of the code was supported by the American Dental Association, American Dental Hygienists’ Association, National Dental Association, Society of American Indian Dentists, Children’s Health Alliance of Wisconsin, National Coalition of Dentists for Health Equity, NorthWest Health Law Advocates, Community Catalyst, and the Center for Medicare Advocacy.
