WASHINGTON, DC—American Dental Education Association (ADEA) President Ronald J. Hunt, D.D.S., presented Presidential Citations to nine leaders who have demonstrated exceptional service to the Association. The awards were presented at the opening ceremony of the 2010 ADEA Annual Session & Exhibition in Washington, DC.
“I am proud to present the 2010 ADEA Presidential Citations to recognize members who have given of themselves in exemplary ways,” said Dr. Hunt.
Citations were presented to:
Eugene L. Anderson, Ph.D., Associate Executive Director and Director, ADEA Center for Educational Policy and Research
Dr. Anderson has transformed the ADEA Center for Educational Policy and Research into a team that works diligently to expand policy research, association reports, and presentations, as well as to support the ADEA Commission on Change and Innovation in Dental Education. Since joining ADEA in 2006, Dr. Anderson continues to support the mission and goals of the Association at the highest level.
Charles N. Bertolami, D.D.S., D.Med.Sc., Herman Robert Fox Dean and Professor, New York University College of Dentistry
Dr. Bertolami has filled many diverse roles in dental education and research, including service as President of the American Association for Dental Research (AADR) and work with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Blue Ribbon Panel on Research Training and Career Development. The ADEA Past President was Chair of the first ADEA President’s Task Force on Future Faculty. Dr. Bertolami continues to provide his unique perspective on and to eloquently communicate the top issues of dental education.
Martha M. Bushong, M.S., Director of Communications and Advancement Services, Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry
Ms. Bushong’s role as Chair of the ADEA Annual Session Program Committee (ADEA ASPC) played a major role in the development and conceptualization of the 2010 ADEA Annual Session & Exhibition. She also provided powerful insight as a member of the ADEA Commission on Change and Innovation in Dental Education Public Relations Task Force.
Rowland A. Hutchinson, D.D.S., M.S., Dean Emeritus, University of Louisville School of Dentistry
Dr. Hutchinson was recognized for his expansive and unwavering contributions to ADEA. He has held nearly every ADEA leadership role while serving as Dean at the University of Detroit Mercy and the University of Louisville. Under his leadership, the Deans’ Institute summer program brought together dental school deans from the United States and Canada to speak with experts, exchange ideas, and learn from each other. His support of ADEA and the positive impact he has had on the Association will be felt for generations to come.
Nadeem Y. Karimbux, D.M.D., M.M.Sc., Assistant Dean for Dental Education and Associate Professor, Harvard School of Dental Medicine
Dr. Karimbux links the two distinct worlds of clinicians and educators. Before holding his current position, he served as Director of Predoctoral Periodontology at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine. His service to ADEA encompasses four years on the ADEA Council of Faculties, membership on the Journal of Dental Education Editorial Board, and representing ADEA as Associate Editor for MedEdPORTAL. His contributions to the scholarship of teaching and learning, student-centered teaching, problem-based learning, and his own critical thought and analysis are reflected in his over 40 papers, authored textbooks, and lectures he has presented worldwide. Dr. Karimbux continues to facilitate learning across a wide spectrum of learners and among disciplines.
James J. Koelbl, D.D.S., M.S., M.J., Founding Dean, Western University of Health Sciences College of Dental Medicine
Dr. Koelbl was recognized for his ability to meld contrasting points of view on legislation, especially health care reform. Dr. Koelbl started his 30-year academic career as an Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He served as Chair of the ADEA Legislative Advisory Committee, where he contributed to the drafting of ADEA’s policy statement on health care reform, garnered support for it among ADEA members, and was instrumental in its ultimate approval by the ADEA House of Delegates. Dr. Koelbl continues to seek collaboration at the highest levels for the advancement of ADEA and dental education.
Laura M. Neumann, D.D.S., M.P.H., Associate Executive Director, Division of Education, American Dental Association
Dr. Neumann was recognized for her commitment and dedication as a founding member of the ADEA Commission on Change and Innovation in Dental Education. Her experience in educational testing and accreditation processes continues to be an invaluable asset to academic dental institutions.
Ronald L. Tankersley, D.D.S., President, American Dental Association
Dr. Tankersley was recognized for his active collaboration with ADEA President Dr. Ronald J. Hunt, which brought together the principal officers of the two associations for informative gatherings. Their commitment to working together resulted in the successful American Dental Association (ADA)/ADEA workshop “Educating the New Dental Team Members.” Dr. Tankersley continues to collaborate with ADEA for the benefit of the entire field of dentistry.
Anne Wells, Ed.D., Associate Executive Director, ADEA Division of Educational Pathways
Dr. Wells joined ADEA in 2003 and has led the ADEA Associated American Dental Schools Application Service (ADEA AADSAS), expanded program participation for the ADEA Postdoctoral Application Support Service (ADEA PASS), and recently oversaw the collaboration between ADEA PASS and Dental MATCH, the Postdoctoral Dental Matching Program. Under her leadership, ADEA successfully launched the ADEA Centralized Application for Advanced Placement for International Dentists (ADEA CAAPID). Dr. Wells continues to help many realize their goals in dental education.
